Learning to Take it Easy
This past week I’ve been on vacation with my rocking awesome (and super hot! yes, I said it) fiance. As I am waiting to transition to a new position within my company, I have found a BUNCH of unexpected free time on my hands. While I have used the time to tackle overdue chores like bleaching the shower curtain, catch up with old friends, and think about my upcoming wedding – I also have forced myself to practice the art of taking it easy. I find it incredibly hard to do, well, nothing.
Why? Why is it hard for me to just sit myself down and get lost in a book? Take a nap? Watch a goofy TV show? While on vacation, I noticed the way my family interactions. We, especially my mom, are on the go-go-go. Admittedly, because we are so GO it seems that our energy explodes into a million different directions and we often find it difficult to accomplish tasks; that energy has got to be directed.
There is a kind of joy in doing nothing, I’ve found. Obviously, life can be just as unproductive (but MORE stressful) when energy doesn’t have a plan, a purpose, a focus. During my down time I have appreciated the chance to not really think about what comes next or push to get one hundred things done when I really only have time for fifty.
Long story short, I have been learning to just chill out this week. It has been good. 🙂 Life will crank back up to full scale come Monday and I will remember these lazy days gone by.
Good post, Victoria. I too have been struggling to just “chill.” If I’m sitting down reading or watching TV, it’s not very long before my mind starts wondering about stuff I “might” have to do. Then I can’t focus. I don’t know if this is a college thing or a being a recent grownup thing.
I am really trying to cherish my “me” time since I feel once I hit the real world it will be so hard to come by. Thanks for sharing 😀
I am so with you on this one, my dear! When I first got my job it was so hard to just sit and not do ANYTHING, because while I was in school I was constantly worrying and thinking about what I had to do for homework, tests to study for, papers to write, etc. Now that I’m done with school I cherish my me time more.
Hope life slows down for you a bit. 🙂
