24 July 2010
Here’s the story, I’ve recently become addicted to the show 24! (Late by 8 seasons, I know!) As much fun as it is to watch Jack Bauer scare the living daylights out of evil terrorists, I couldn’t watch without thinking of the great spiritual analogy.
Work with me on this one.
Jack Bauer is always contacting CTU with specific instructions. Bauer is constantly asking his coworkers to upload a satellite image of the perimeter, perform a background check on a suspect, or send in reinforcements. Every episode, the poor people at CTU have to take Jack at his word and, in faith, obey his commands. Oftentimes, CTU personnel have tons of nagging questions and complaints about the way Jack is running the show but, since Jack is the head agent, he sees the entire problem.
Do you see where I’m going?
Not that Jack Bauer is a deity, but he stands in for God very well here. In our spiritual walk, the LORD will give His children, His followers, His personnel very specific directions. Too often, we ask God those same unbelieving questions. We, like the underlings at CTU, have not been given the authority or responsibility to see the whole picture. Rather, we are called to be obedient and submissive to our ultimate authority.
Philippians 2: 14-16 “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.” (NIV)
And, believe it or not, that’s way cooler than any assignment from Jack Bauer. :0)
