|Sunset at Folly Beach, SC – Delightful!|
Those of us who have spent any time in a church pew or Christian bookstore will be familiar with Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (ESV)
I would venture to say that our understanding of those words may be incomplete. The truth presented is utterly amazing.
Take the first half of Ps. 37:4, “Delight yourself in the LORD.” How is this accomplished? The Westminster Catechism teaches, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” Simply, delighting in the LORD is glorifying him. We glorify God by obeying his commandments, trusting his sovereignty, and praising his name.
Now, the second half, “and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Does this verse imply that God is some cosmic-Santa-Claus? Not at all! The beautiful reality at play here is this: When we are so intertwined in God’s law, his desires become our desires.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Are you a devout follower of Christ who deeply desires to become a missionary in Africa? Are you a single woman seeking Jesus who desires to be married? Are you a Christian man who has a great desire to join the military? These desires could very well be indicators of God’s will for your life.
My friends, don’t worry or fret unnecessarily. Have faith, seek God, and trust that as you walk in step with the LORD – he will give you the desires of your heart. Dance with happiness! What an incredible gift that God grants his children.
